Other solutions to restore missing Store app
If the above methods failed to restore the missing Store app, you can create a new user account and check if the Store app shows up there. If yes, move your data to the new account and start using that account. Alternatively, you can reset Windows 10 without data loss or perform a reinstall of Windows 10 without losing data.
Perhaps Windows 10 won't start. Or maybe it boots, but crashes a lot. In either case, you need to fix the problem before you can use your laptop. If your screen is rotated, don't even worry about that because we have a fix for that. Otherwise, here are a few ways to repair Windows 10.
Method 1: Use Windows Startup Repair
If Windows 10 won't even boot up and take you to the login screen or the desktop, your first step should be to use Startup Repair. Here's how:
1. Navigate to the Windows 10 Advanced Startup Options menu. There are many ways to get to Windows 10 Advanced Startup Options. On many laptops, hitting F11 as soon as you power on will get you there. Booting off an install disk and hitting Next then Repair will do the job too.
Once your computer has booted, you'll want to select Troubleshoot
And then you'll need to click Advanced options.
2. Click Startup Repair.
Windows will take anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes to attempt to fix the problem. It may not be able to. If you don't actually have a startup problem, it will also say it can't fix the problem.
Method 2: Use Windows Restore
1. Complete step 1 from the previous method to get to Windows 10's Advanced Startup Options menu.
2. Click System Restore.
The computer will reboot.
3. Select your username.
4. Enter your password.
5. Select a restore point from the menu and follow the prompts. If you have no restore points, you can't use this method.
Method 3: Perform a Disk Scan
Your Windows 10 problems may stem from a corrupt file. If you can boot into the operating system -- even if you have to boot into safe mode -- you should perform a file scan to check for problems.
1. Type 'cmd' into the main search box.
2. Right click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator.

Method 4: Reset Windows 10
If you want to get a clean start, free from rogue software and drivers, you usually don't need to do a full install. Instead, Windows 10 provides a built-in reset feature which takes your computer back to the way it was before you had any software, special devices or data preloaded. On a side note, if you're giving your computer to someone else, resetting is a good way to wipe it.
See our tutorial on how to reset Windows 10 to refresh your PC.
Method 5: Reinstall Windows 10 from Scratch
If all else fails and you can't even reset your Windows computer, you can reinstall entirely. You won't even need an activation number or any proof of purchase, either. Just make sure you have more than 4GB of space available, as that's how much space the file you'll download takes up. Here's how to reinstall Windows 10:

More Tips
When you begin to notice random errors, issues during boot or Windows components are not working as they should on your computer there is a good chance that one or more system files may have gone missing or corrupted.
Even though Windows 10 does a good job protecting files that are necessary for your PC to work correctly, applications, drivers, or even Windows Update may sometimes be the cause of system instability. Like in previous versions, for these situations, Windows 10 includes the System File Checker (SFC), a tiny but powerful command-line utility that can scan the integrity and replace any corrupted or missing protected system file with a known good version.
In this guide, we'll walk you through the steps to use System File Checker (SFC) to repair any damaged system file automatically while you're running the operating system, offline using Advanced startup, and manually when SFC is unable to fix the problem.
Before you begin, it's important to note that you'll be making changes to your system, as such it's recommended to do a full backup or create a system restore point in case things go wrong, and you need to roll back.
How to scan and repair system files on Windows 10
The following command will do a full scan of the protected system files on your computer and fix any file that are causing issues while Windows 10 is up and running.
- Use the Windows key + X keyboard shortcut to open the Power User menu and select Command Prompt (Admin), as you will need administrator permissions to run SFC.
- In the Command Prompt type the following command and press Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Once the scan completes, you will see one of the following messages:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: This indicates that your system doesn't have any missing or corrupted files.
- Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: This message means that there was a problem during the scan and an offline scan is required.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Details are included in the CBS.Log %WinDir%LogsCBSCBS.log: You will get this message when SFC was able to fix the problem. Now, you can move on or you can view the logs to get more details.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log %WinDir%LogsCBSCBS.log: In this case, you'll need to repair the corrupted files manually.
Quick Tip: You may want to run the command around three times to fix all the problems.
How to view the details of an SFC scan
To see the details of a System File Checker stored in the CBS.Log file, you'll need to make a readable copy on your desktop:
- Use the Windows key + X keyboard shortcut to open the Power User menu and select Command Prompt.
- Type the following command and press Enter:
findstr /c:'[SR]' %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >'%userprofile%Desktopsfclogs.txt'
- Open the sfclogs.txt located on the desktop with Notepad. The file will contain all the details of the scanned system files and information for files that couldn't be repaired.
Note: Details for SFC scans are only available when you do a scan within Windows, not when you do an offline scan on Command Prompt.
How to scan and repair system files on Windows 10 offline
Sometimes protected system files that need to be repaired are loaded in memory while Windows 10 is running. If this is the case, you can run SFC offline to fix your computer.
- Use the Windows key + I keyboard shortcut to open the Settings app.
- Click Update & security.
- Click Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, click Restart now.
- Click Troubleshoot.
- Click Advanced options.
- Click Command Prompt to boot your computer only with Command Prompt.
- On reboot, you'll be prompted to enter your username and password to continue.
- Whenever you need to run SCF outside of Windows, you need to tell the utility exactly where the Windows installation files are. On Command Prompt, type the following command to understand the location of the Windows and System Reserved partitions.
wmic logicaldisk get deviceid, volumename, description
- Type the following command, and press Enter:
sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C: /offwindir=D:Windows
Note: We're using the /offboodir switch to specify the drive letter of the System Reserved partition, which in this case is C, and the /offwindir switch specifies the location of the Windows files, which in this case is D:Windows.Keep in mind that when you boot your computer with Command Prompt, the drive letters may be different, which is why you need to use the command on step 9. However, most of the time, when working with Windows 10, D: is usually the drive letter for the installation and C: is the letter for the System Reserved partition. - Once the scan is complete, close Command Prompt.
- Click Continue to exit and go back to Windows 10.
How to repair system files manually on Windows 10
If the System File Checker couldn't fix one or more files, you will need to repair them manually.
Open the sfclogs.txt file to determine which are the corrupted files, find where they belong by doing a simple file search or use your preferred Internet search engine to get more details. Then follow the instructions below to replace the corrupted file.
Quick Tip: You can find known good system file copies on another computer running the same version of the operating system like the one running on your PC.
- Use the Windows key + X keyboard shortcut to open the Power User menu and select Command Prompt (Admin).
- Take ownership of the corrupted system file. In the Command Prompt type the following command, and press Enter:
takeown /f C:Path-and-File-Name
Note: Replace C:Path-and-File-Name with the path and name of the corrupted file. For example, C:WindowsSystem32appraiser.dll. - Allow full admin access to the corrupted file using the following command and press Enter:
icacls C:Path-and-File-Name /Grant Administrators:F
- Replace the file in question with a good copy using the following command and press Enter:
copy C:Path-SOURCE-and-File-Name C:Path-DESTINATION-and-File-Name
Note: You need to replace C:Path-SOURCE-and-File-Name with the source path and file name of the known good file, and you also need to replace C:Path-DESTINATION-and-File-Name with the destination path and name of the damaged file. Here's an example: copy D:Filesappraiser.dll C:WindowsSystem32appraiser.dll. - Type Yes and press Enter to confirm the overwrite.
After replacing the file, you can type
SFC /verifyonly
command and press Enter in Command Prompt to verify the integrity of all the system files to see if the problem has been fixed. Alternatively, if you repaired only a few files, you can test the integrity of each file by using the sfc /VERIFYFILE=C:Path-and-File-Name
command (e.g., sfc /VERIFYFILE=C:WindowsSystem32kernel32.dll
).Keep in mind that you're not limited to use this utility on Windows 10, SFC is a command-line tool available on previous versions of the operating system. However, you may find different features depending on the version you're running. In Command Prompt (Admin) use the
sfc /?
command to list the features available to you.More on Windows 10

The Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (version 1709) is now slowly rolling out to compatible devices delivering a new set of features and enhancements, but it appears that not everyone is having a smooth upgrade experience. Alongside a number of problems already reported, some users have also been complaining about apps going missing after installing this release.
At the Microsoft forums, the company explains that after installing the Fall Creators Update, you may notice some app entries missing in the Start menu, and they won't appear in the App list or the Live Tile section. In addition, searching for the app will only show the result to get it from the Microsoft Store, but the Store would say that the app is already installed on your PC.
Microsoft is currently investigating the problem, but until there is a permanent solution, the company is offering a few troubleshooting tips to fix the issue on your device.
In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through the Microsoft's recommendations to resolve the problem of missing apps after installing the Fall Creators Update.
How to repair missing apps on Windows 10
The first thing you can do to restore any missing app is to use the Settings app to repair or reset the app in question.
- Open Settings.
- Click on Apps.
- Click on Apps & features.
- Select the app with the problem.
- Click the Advanced options link.
- Click the Repair button. If the option isn't available, or it didn't fix the problem, click the Reset button, which will delete the app's data along with settings and preferences.
After completing the steps, the app should once again appear in the App list and pinned in the Start menu.
How to reinstall missing apps on Windows 10
If the repair and reset options didn't fix the problem and app still missing, you could try reinstalling the app.
- Open Settings.
- Click on Apps.
- Click on Apps & features.
- Select the app with the problem.
- Click the Uninstall button.
- Click the Uninstall button to confirm.
- Open the Store.
- Search for the app you just uninstalled.
- Click the Get button to reinstall.
Once you've completed the steps, the app should now appear in the Start menu again.
How to re-register apps using PowerShell on Windows 10
The two methods outlined above are more suited if you only have a few apps missing, but if your Start menu has a lot of apps missing, it's recommended to re-register them all in bulk using PowerShell.
- Open Start.
- Search for PowerShell, right-click the result, and select Run as administrator.
- Type the following commands to re-register the missing apps and press Enter on each line:
- Quick Tip: Make sure to close all running applications, including My People from the taskbar on Settings > Personalization > Taskbar to prevent seeing error message 0X80073D02 during the process.
reg delete 'HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionTileDataModelMigrationTileStore' /va /f
get-appxpackage -packageType bundle |% {add-appxpackage -register -disabledevelopmentmode ($_.installlocation + 'appxmetadataappxbundlemanifest.xml')}
$bundlefamilies = (get-appxpackage -packagetype Bundle).packagefamilyname
get-appxpackage -packagetype main |? {-not ($bundlefamilies -contains $_.packagefamilyname)} |% {add-appxpackage -register -disabledevelopmentmode ($_.installlocation + 'appxmanifest.xml')}
After completing the steps mentioned above, all the missing apps should now appear in the Start menu. However, according to Microsoft, if you've already tried the repair, reset, and reinstall options, the PowerShell commands are likely not going to fix the problem.
How to go back to previous version of Windows 10
If you have already tried all the troubleshooting steps to restore the missing apps on your device and nothing has worked, you may have to consider to go back to the previous version of Windows 10.
- Open Settings.
- Click on Update & Security.
- Click on Recovery.
- Under 'Go back to a previous version of Windows 10', click the Get started button.
- Note: If you don't see the option in the Settings app, you won't be able to rollback, but you can use the Reset this PC feature to try to fix the problem
- Select the reason you're rolling back.
- Click Next.
- Click No, thanks.
- Click Next.
- Click Next again.
- Click Go back to earlier build to begin the process.
After going back to the previous version, it's a good idea to block the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update on your device until Microsoft releases a more permanent fix for this problem.
How to reset your PC to its default settings
Alternatively, if the above instructions didn't fix the problem, and you still have missing apps in the Start menu, you can try resetting your device to remove all the apps, drivers, and settings on your current installation.
- Open Settings.
- Click on Update & Security.
- Click on Recovery.
- Under 'Reset this PC,' click the Get Started button.
- Select the Keep may files options.
- Click Next.
- Click Reset to begin the process.
Once you've completed the steps, your device will reset to its default settings fixing all the missing apps in the Start menu. However, you'll need to re-install any other app you may have downloaded previously from the Microsoft Store, and any traditional (win32) applications. Also, you'll need to re-apply your settings and drivers as needed, but your personal files will be kept.
Have you come across this issue after upgrading to the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update? Did any of these solutions fix the problem on your PC? Tell us in the comments.
